Are You Thinking About Chartering A Yacht and Sailing the Caribbean?

Great!

Of course, we might be biased but it is hard to disagree that sailing holidays truly are a new, unique and exciting way to explore an area. And what better way to enjoy a sailing holiday than to be in complete control and charter a yacht?

This post runs you through many of the things you will need to consider about yacht chartering and Caribbean sailing holidays including what to pack and what to expect, as well as giving you information about Saint Vincent and The Grenadines along the way.

Why Choose a Caribbean Vacation?

A Caribbean Holiday is Perfect for Completely Unwinding

When you're searching for your next vacation there are many options: resort hotels; package tours; cruises; etc. As well as deciding what kind of holiday you want also comes the difficult question of deciding where you want to go.

If you have never been to the Caribbean before then it is definitely somewhere to add to your list. It is one of the places in the world where the reality lives up to the photographs (yes the sea really is the same colour as these pictures!!)

The Caribbean naturally oozes a relaxed, chilled out vibe, perfect for those looking to escape from their day job and experience a completely different lifestyle.

Why Choose The Grenadines?

Untitled design (3).jpgNow we have you dreaming about white sands and sunshine of the Caribbean we can explain why you should choose Saint Vincent and The Grenadines as your Caribbean vacation destination.

Each area in the Caribbean has its own unique history, things to do, food, culture and vibe. For those looking for a busier atmosphere you might be better suited to Jamaica or Aruba. However for those looking for a totally chilled-out holiday where you can completely forget about your day job, the islands of the Grenadines will be more up your street.

One of the main reasons that people enjoy holidaying in the Caribbean is to explore and experience some of the world’s most beautiful natural rainforests, beaches and parks which the Grenadines has in abundance.

If you are into movies, you might be also interested in visiting some of the filming areas for the film franchise Pirates of the Caribbean including St Vincent and Petite Tabac.

Planning Your Caribbean Holiday

The only "downside" of holidays in the Caribbean or specifically The Grenadines is the relatively limited ways in which to do so. There are not many airports meaning you can't fly between islands. You can of course choose to book a cruise however many of these are all-inclusive which can limit your ability to experience the local cuisines and culture and due to their size are unable to reach some of the smaller islands.

Our Caribbean holidays are available in the magnificent islands of the Grenadines. Each island is unique with its own areas to explore. We can suggest an itinerary or you can build your own if you have particular spots you wish to spend more time exploring. The Grenadines is a great spot to charter a yacht as each island chain has a fantastic culture with lots to see and do both on land and from the sea.

If you do not have a nautical license then you will not be able to skipper a rental yacht yourself. This will mean you will need to find a yacht chartering company which includes a skipper. At Kalimba Caribbean Tours our experienced skipper will be happy to show you the ropes if you fancy trying sailing yourself. Alternatively you can sit back and relax as our guide takes you from island to island. If you are looking for a way to discover the ‘real’ Caribbean then chartering a yacht is the answer you are looking for.

Average Temperature in Grenada

Besides the beautiful landscapes and culture, the other reason people choose The Grenadines is the pretty much guaranteed sunshine and warmth you would expect on a relaxing beach holiday. You can see the average temperatures per month for Grenada below for an example of what to expect.

Why Choose Yacht Charters?

The initial question, why charter a yacht?

Yacht chartering has changed a lot over the years. Whilst it was once reserved only for the rich, nowadays there are hundreds of charter yachts across the world. With this increase in charters available there inevitably comes more choice, which is great as people with all different needs and budgets are able to enjoy this amazing way to travel and holiday.

At Kalimba Caribbean Tours, we believe that chartering a yacht is the ultimate way to spend your vacation. Our customers have repeatedly told us that their sailing holiday was one of the best experiences of their lives. So whether you are travelling as a couple or group chartering a yacht is the perfect way to explore a new place and make memories you will remember forever.

Feel Free, Accomplished, Relaxed and Excited All At the Same Time

There are lots of reasons why you may choose to charter a yacht. For those interested in exploring the Caribbean, it is the perfect way to holiday in this beautiful area. You can avoid the restrictions and crowds found on cruise ships and you also avoid the need to continuously pack and unpack. Instead, you can simply leave everything in the safety of your yacht and explore the island you are anchored at.

Yacht chartering is also great for those who are interested in sailing. If you've ever sailed at home you might enjoy trying out sailing on the Caribbean seas. Your skipper will show you the ropes, letting you and your party try out sailing as much or as little as you’d like.

Still unconvinced? Here are some more reasons people love to charter:

  • You can avoid crowds and take your vacation at your own pace.
  • You are able to learn about sailing if you have never tried it before.
  • You can be as relaxed or as active as you like.
  • You can visit places you can only reach by sea and explore the areas cruise tourists can’t.
  • You will enjoy a unique and unforgettable holiday which makes the most of your budget.
  • You are able to learn from your skipper who will have likely lived in the area for years.
  • You are more likely to spend time with the locals and to try the local cuisines and drinks.

Even in this knowledge, some people still think they would be too cramped on a boat. After travelling with many different people we have never found this to be the case. Yes, it is different to a hotel room but different doesn't mean bad!

However if you really don’t like the idea of sleeping aboard a yacht then why not try our powerboat island hopping tour? This involves a smaller powerboat (Kalimba Too) which can travel quicker between islands. During this vacation you will stay in local guest houses on the islands instead of on the yacht. You can read more about our different yachts and their specs on our website. If you have any questions you can also contact us. We’ll be happy to talk you through the differences and find the better option for you.

Planning Sailing Holidays Caribbean

The great thing about yacht charters is that with many (particularly independent) companies you are able to create an itinerary that fits your budget. If you are travelling as part of a group the cost is split amongst your party which will greatly reduce the cost. You are paying for the boat, as opposed to a room like in a hotel or cruise ship. Yacht chartering is more similar to villa rentals.

The type of boat you decide to choose for your sailing holiday will depend entirely on your requirements, so it really is a matter of personal preference. If you prefer to take life a little slower, our sailing boat Kalimba will better suit your needs. For those who enjoy speed our powerboat vacation might be better.

Before chartering a yacht you should understand the size and facilities. Most companies will have photos and layouts of the boats available. You should also see a list of the equipment and amenities available; including basic safety, galley equipment, entertainment, linen, etc. Discussion with the yacht owner before booking will help you to understand what you will need to bring.

Your airfare won’t be included in your yacht rental price. Some companies may be able to provide you with flight details. If you find particularly good flights you should ensure your chosen yacht is available on those dates before booking.

How to Decide Where to Charter?

Sailboat charter companies greatly vary in size from small, independently run businesses to larger organisations which run many yachts in various parts of the world. Good companies will, of course, exist in all categories.

To decide on the type of company you are looking for you will need to first decide the kind of sailing vacation that you want. Secondly you need to be realistic about what you can afford, taking into consideration the number of people who will be on the vacation, the location, flights, extras and the duration of the trip. If you are looking for a one of a kind holiday an independent charter may help take away the cruise feeling.

Which Yacht Charter Company Is Right for You?

Once you have narrowed down the area you wish to explore you will need to bring together a list of potential companies to charter from. You may wish to read reviews, join forums and ask questions to get a feel for the yacht owner/skipper and whether they will be the right fit for your holiday. Take note of how engaged the company owners/representatives are as well, you will at the end of the day be spending time with them so it would be good for you to get along.

When you have decided to book you will be required to pay a deposit and sign a contract, covering issues such as liability, insurance, cancellations, etc.

What to Pack?

Sailing is not a formal affair. Packing light is necessary for getting luggage on and off the yacht and due to the lack of storage space for heavy, oversized suitcases. Obviously sailing holidays to the Caribbean greatly involve the sea so bathing suits and light clothing is important.

Caribbean Yacht Charters - How Long Should You Charter for?

You will need to consider the time required to get to your starting destination and travelling back here for your return flight. Around two weeks is a good length of time to charter a yacht to ensure that you spend enough time on each island.

The initial steps will involve putting together a list of all the places you wish to visit. From this an itinerary can be made showing on

A Caribbean yacht charter holiday offers something unique, something that’s not to everyone’s tastes, something for the adventurous.

What to See and Do In Grenada

Grenada itself has lots to see and explore. The Grenada base at St. George’s harbour is one of the nicest in the whole of the Caribbean. Reliable sunshine, postcard perfect beaches. Scuba diving and snorkelling for those who enjoy water sports.

Our sailing holiday in the Grenadines begins from our base in the Grenada marina (as this where the international airport is and most likely where you will first arrive). You can island hop to your heart’s content, exploring the unique values of each island. The Caribbean is a great treat for all the senses.

For the adventurous why not explore the local waterfalls? Some are right near the coasts whilst others require you to venture further into the island. If you want to see turtles and other sea life in their natural habitat the Caribbean is a perfect place to visit.

Grenada is also known as the ‘Spice Island’. It features small local farms, rainforests, historic forth, rum distilleries and colourful coral gardens. Grenada has rare tropical flowers and has a wide variety of animal life. Whilst there is a lot to explore in Grenada it is usually used as a base for a sailing holiday.

Film location of Pirates of the Caribbean. Swim with turtles and snorkel in the reefs. You can enjoy watching the sunset from a beachside bar, cocktail in hand, every single night of your holiday.

From Grenada we typically enjoy easy sailing to neighbouring island of Carriacou, the first inhabited Island North of Grenada. Sailing takes about 6 hours.
